Why shouldn’t farmers have the right to drain wetlands on their property?
We support the working landscape. We want all farmers and landowners to make the most of their land. We need to find ways to support farmers and landowners to counteract the market signals they are receiving to drain wetlands.
When wetlands are drained, the consequences run downstream and affect many people. The water needs to go somewhere, which often means flooding on someone else’s property. Additionally, draining wetlands removes the land’s natural ability to filter pollution and keep harmful nutrients from entering our rivers and lakes.
Drainage isn’t the agricultural community’s issue; it’s society’s issue.
