What causes algal blooms?
When wetlands are drained or destroyed, the landscape loses its natural filtration system. Nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus flow downstream and into our lakes and rivers. High concentrations of these nutrients contribute to toxic algae blooms.
DUC works to conserve and restore wetlands throughout the Lake Winnipeg watershed through programs such as land acquisition and conservation agreements. By storing excess water, wetlands remove nutrients that cause algal blooms before they reach lakes. DUC also works with landowners to implement best management practices on agricultural lands and the other land surrounding wetlands.
